Robots/Parts/AI model
Gemini Robotics
A family of AI models for robots from Google DeepMind, built on its Gemini models. One kind turns camera pictures and written instructions into movements. Another, called ER for embodied reasoning, understands space and plans tasks step by step. A smaller version is made to run on the robot itself. Boston Dynamics is working to put these models into its Atlas humanoid, and Agility has shown Digit taking instructions through a Gemini research preview.

Strengths and trade-offs
Our analysisStrengths
Built on one of the most capable general AI models, so it understands everyday language and scenes.
Made to work on robots of different shapes, not just one.
Comes in sizes from a large model to one that runs on the robot.
Backed by a company with the money to keep improving it.
Trade-offs
Most of the family is only open to approved testers.
Owned by Google, so robot makers depend on another company for a core ability.
Still has to be adapted to each robot before it is useful.
The larger models may need a connection to Google's servers.
Why robot makers choose it
Our readBuilding a robot AI model that understands language and the world takes huge amounts of data and computing. Boston Dynamics said when announcing the partnership in January 2026 that it needed a partner for this kind of model, and Google DeepMind is one of very few with the means to build it.
This is our reasoning from the public facts. No maker has confirmed it.
Robots using it
Boston Dynamics AtlasConfirmedHumanoid, production atlasBoston Dynamics and Google DeepMind are working together to put Google's Gemini Robotics AI models into the new Atlas. This is joint research that started in 2026, so it may not be what controls every robot in use today.
Agility DigitConfirmedHumanoid, research useAgility has tested steering Digit's movement model with a research preview of Google DeepMind's Gemini AI, and DeepMind lists Agility among early testers of its Gemini Robotics-ER model. This is described as research, not what runs on customer robots.
This list covers only the robots researched so far. A robot missing here may still use this part.
