Absolute Scanner AS1
A precision 3D scanner made by Hexagon, a Swedish measurement company. It sweeps a line of blue laser light across a part and measures its shape to within a few hundredths of a millimetre, so factories can check that parts were made exactly right. It is normally held on Hexagon's measuring arm or tracked by its laser tracker. On the AEON humanoid it is an attachable tool, not a built-in sensor: Hexagon shows AEON scanning a car part with it, and says scanning tools can be fitted to the robot.

Strengths and trade-offs
Our analysisStrengths
Extremely precise, measuring to a small fraction of a millimetre.
Very fast, so large parts can be checked quickly.
Copes with shiny and dark surfaces, which trouble many scanners.
Made by the same company as AEON, so the two are designed to work together.
Trade-offs
It only works close up, about 11 to 21 cm from the part.
Its full accuracy depends on knowing exactly where the scanner is, which normally needs Hexagon's arm or tracker.
A specialist factory tool, no price is published and it is sold through sales staff.
It is a tool the robot carries, not a sense the robot uses to get around.
Why robot makers choose it
Our readChecking parts is skilled, repetitive work, and Hexagon already sells the scanners that factories trust for it. Putting its own scanner in the hands of its own humanoid lets Hexagon offer a robot that can do inspection work straight away, on a factory floor built for people.
This is our reasoning from the public facts. No maker has confirmed it.
Robots using it
This list covers only the robots researched so far. A robot missing here may still use this part.
