IGX Thor

An industrial version of Nvidia's Thor robot computer. It has the same powerful chip as the Jetson Thor, plus extra safety features: a separate small processor that watches the main one and can make the machine react safely if something goes wrong. Agility's Digit 5 safety system is built on it.

Strengths and trade-offs

Our analysis

Strengths

Built-in safety hardware, which helps a robot get certified to work near people.

Enough computing to run large AI models on the robot.

Long support period, which industrial buyers value.

Same chip family as the Jetson Thor, so the same software runs on both.

Trade-offs

Expensive, and sold through distributors with no public price.

Can draw a lot of power, which shortens battery life.

New, so it has little time in real use.

Ties the robot to a single supplier.

Why robot makers choose it

Our read

A humanoid that walks among warehouse workers has to prove it is safe, and that needs hardware designed to standards safety assessors recognise. Nvidia said Digit 5's safety system was developed on top of IGX Thor and its Halos safety framework, according to Robotics and Automation News, which gives Agility a ready-made base instead of building one.

This is our reasoning from the public facts. No maker has confirmed it.
