Orbbec Gemini 2L
A depth camera made by Orbbec, a Chinese 3D camera company. Two infrared cameras set 10 cm apart work as a pair, like eyes, to measure how far away each thing is, and a colour camera sits between them. The wide spacing lets it judge distance further away than smaller cameras. UBTech's Walker S2 EDU carries two of them, one on the back of the body and one at the front of the waist.

Strengths and trade-offs
Our analysisStrengths
Judges distance out to about 10 metres, further than most small depth cameras.
A wide view, so fewer cameras are needed to cover the space around a robot.
Gives distance, colour and motion from one unit on a single cable.
Cheaper than its best-known rival, the RealSense D455.
Trade-offs
Rated for indoors and only partly outdoors, so bright sun can hurt it.
At 12 cm wide it needs more room than smaller depth cameras.
Shiny surfaces and glass confuse it, as they do all cameras of this kind.
Fewer ready-made examples than RealSense, although Orbbec has its own free software.
Why robot makers choose it
Our readA humanoid that walks among people needs to see obstacles a few metres away all round its body, not only in front of its face. A long-reach, wide-view camera at a low price lets a maker like UBTech cover the back and the waist as well. Orbbec is also a large Chinese supplier, which suits Chinese robot makers who want parts made close to home.
This is our reasoning from the public facts. No maker has confirmed it.

This list covers only the robots researched so far. A robot missing here may still use this part.
