RealSense D455
A depth camera, the longer-range sibling of the RealSense D435i. Two cameras set further apart than on the D435i work as a pair, like eyes, to measure how far away each thing is, and a colour camera sits beside them. It also has a built-in motion sensor. On Agility's Digit it sits in the neck. RealSense says Digit uses it to spot plastic totes, avoid bumping into things and map the ground ahead of its feet. RealSense became a separate company from Intel in 2025.

Strengths and trade-offs
Our analysisStrengths
Sees about twice as far as the D435i, up to around 6 metres.
Gives distance, colour and motion from one small unit.
Its shutter takes the whole picture at once, so it copes with a robot that is walking and swaying.
Uses the same well-known RealSense software as the D435i.
Trade-offs
Cannot see things closer than about half a metre in full detail, so it is poor for work right at the hands.
Sunlight, shiny surfaces and glass confuse it.
Wider than the D435i, so it needs more room to mount.
Only covers what is in front of it.
Why robot makers choose it
Our readA walking robot needs to see the floor a few steps ahead and the boxes it is about to lift, often while it is moving. The D455 reaches further than smaller depth cameras and takes sharp pictures on the move. RealSense says Agility chose it for its depth quality, low power use, moderate cost and mature software.
This is our reasoning from the public facts. No maker has confirmed it.
