RoboSense E1R
A small laser scanner, or lidar, made by RoboSense, a Chinese lidar company. Unlike older scanners it has no spinning or moving parts: it fires laser light across a wide, fixed window and times the reflections to build a 3D picture. On AgiBot's X2 Ultra it sits in the chest and is used for mapping and working out exactly where the robot is.

Strengths and trade-offs
Our analysisStrengths
No moving parts, so there is less to wear out or break when a robot falls.
A very tall view, 90° up and down, so it sees the floor and the ceiling at once.
Sealed against dust and water and built for harsh conditions.
Flat and compact, so it fits inside a robot's chest.
Trade-offs
Sees 120° across, not all the way round, so the robot has a blind side behind it.
Costs more than small all-round scanners such as the Livox Mid-360.
Like all laser scanners, it sees shape but not colour or writing.
Glass and mirrors confuse it.
Why robot makers choose it
Our readA walking robot shakes and sometimes falls, which is hard on spinning scanners. A solid-state lidar with a tall view covers the ground ahead and the space at head height in one piece with nothing to wear out. RoboSense makes lidars in large numbers for cars, which helps keep the price near a thousand dollars.
This is our reasoning from the public facts. No maker has confirmed it.
