Strengths and trade-offs
Our analysisStrengths
Cheap and light.
A wide view takes in more of the scene.
Gives the owner a live picture from the robot.
Trade-offs
One camera cannot measure distance on its own.
A wide lens bends straight lines at the edges.
Poor light makes it much less useful.
Why robot makers choose it
Our readA robot dog sold to the public needs a camera for its owner to see through and for simple features like following a person. A single wide camera does that for very little, with the laser scanner handling distance.
This is our reasoning from the public facts. No maker has confirmed it.
Robots using it
This list covers only the robots researched so far. A robot missing here may still use this part.
