Strengths and trade-offs
Our analysisStrengths
Sees all the way round, in the dark as well as in daylight.
Accurate over tens of metres.
Gives a reliable map to walk by.
Trade-offs
Sees shape, not colour or writing.
Costs more than a camera.
Glass and mirrors confuse it.
Why robot makers choose it
Our readWalking around a building safely means knowing where the walls and people are in every direction, in any light. A laser scanner does that more dependably than cameras alone.
This is our reasoning from the public facts. No maker has confirmed it.
Robots using it
This list covers only the robots researched so far. A robot missing here may still use this part.
