Unitree joint motorsIn-houseOur estimateConfirmed

Unitree's own brushless joint motors, each with two position sensors and a hollow shaft so wires run through the joint. Twelve Unitree joint motors, three per leg, drive the As2. They are low-inertia, high-speed inner-rotor permanent magnet synchronous motors, brushless motors with the magnets on the spinning part, each with two encoders. Unitree rates the strongest joint at about 65 N.m on the Air, 75 N.m on the Pro and 95 N.m on the X and EDU.

Part priceOur estimateUS$120 to US$900 each

Based on: Unitree makes the G1's joint motors itself and does not sell them, so this is not their price. It is the price range of comparable joint actuators a builder can buy, from about US$120 for a 5 Nm wrist-size unit to about US$900 for a 120 Nm leg-size unit. A full G1 uses 23 to 43 of these, so buying comparables for one robot would cost several thousand dollars, far more than Unitree likely pays to make its own.

Every robot using Unitree joint motors

Unitree joint motorsIn-houseOur estimateConfirmed

Unitree's own brushless joint motors, each with two position sensors and a hollow shaft so wires run through the joint. Unitree's robot model file caps the hip and thigh joints at 60 N.m and 24 rad/s, and the calf joints at 90 N.m and 16 rad/s.

Crossed roller bearingsOur estimateConfirmed

Joint output bearings with rollers set at right angles, so one bearing carries loads from every direction. The joints sit on industrial-grade crossed roller bearings, which take loads from every direction in one bearing.

Part priceOur estimateUS$130 to US$200

Based on: Robot companies do not sell the crossed roller bearings in their joints, and the one found in a G1 is a Luoyang Baina part with no public price, so this is not its price. It is the price of comparable branded crossed roller bearings a builder can buy one at a time, with a bore of 35 to 40 mm like the Baina CRBT355A. A crossed roller bearing has small rollers set at right angles to each other so one thin ring can carry loads from every direction; Chinese companies selling in bulk to robot companies likely charge much less.

Planetary gear reducerIn-houseOur estimateLikely

A compact gearbox where small gears circle a central gear, trading motor speed for more turning force. Unitree's prospectus says its joint modules pair its own motors with planetary reducers it designs and makes, compact gearboxes with teeth shaped for leg impacts.

As2 battery, 8000mAh or 15000mAhIn-houseConfirmed

Unitree's own lithium pack for the As2 robot dog, in a standard and a long-range size. The Air ships with a standard 8000mAh pack and the Pro, X and EDU with a 15000mAh, 648 Wh long-range pack, for about 2 and about 4 hours of walking unloaded. The robot runs on 36 to 50.4 V; the cell company is not named.
