Robots/Parts/Chip

Jetson Orin

A family of small computers from Nvidia made for running AI inside machines. It ranges from the low-cost Orin Nano to the powerful AGX Orin. On Unitree's robots it is an add-on for buyers who want to run their own AI on board.

Strengths and trade-offs

Our analysis

Strengths

A lot of AI computing for 10 to 25 watts, which matters on a battery.

Small enough to fit inside a robot.

Runs the same Nvidia software used to train robots, so less has to be rewritten.

The most widely used robot computer, so help and examples are easy to find.

Trade-offs

Ties the robot to a single supplier.

Prices have risen sharply.

Too small to run the largest AI models on its own.

On Unitree's robots it is an extra, not part of the basic price.

Why robot makers choose it

Our read

A robot maker wants a computer that sips power, fits in the body and already runs the tools its engineers use. Orin does all three, and so many robots use it that choosing anything else means more work.

This is our reasoning from the public facts. No maker has confirmed it.
