Intel RealSense D435i

A depth camera. Two infrared cameras work as a pair, like eyes, to measure how far away each thing is, and a normal colour camera sits beside them. The "i" means it also has a motion sensor. RealSense became a separate company from Intel in 2025, but the camera is still widely sold under the Intel name.

Strengths and trade-offs

Our analysis

Strengths

Gives distance and colour from one small unit.

Works in the dark, because it lights the scene with its own infrared pattern.

A very large body of ready-made software and examples.

Cheap enough to fit more than one.

Trade-offs

Accuracy falls off quickly beyond a few metres.

Sunlight, shiny surfaces and glass confuse it.

It only covers what is in front of it, unlike a scanner that sees all round.

Needs a fast connection and steady computing power to keep up.

Why robot makers choose it

Our read

A laser scanner tells a robot where the walls are. A hand reaching for a cup needs to know exactly how far away the cup is, in colour, at arm's length. A depth camera in the head covers that close-up work, and this one is the model most robot software already supports.

This is our reasoning from the public facts. No maker has confirmed it.

Robots using it

This list covers only the robots researched so far. A robot missing here may still use this part.
