Livox MID-360
A small laser scanner made by Livox. It sweeps a laser pattern all the way round the robot and builds a 3D picture of the room many times a second, so the robot knows where walls, furniture and people are.

Strengths and trade-offs
Our analysisStrengths
Sees all the way round with one small unit.
Light enough to sit on a robot's head.
Sealed against dust and water.
Much cheaper than the spinning scanners that came before it.
Trade-offs
Only 59° up and down, so it misses what is directly above and close around the feet.
Its scan pattern is unusual, so standard mapping software has to be adapted.
Like all laser scanners, it sees shape but not colour or writing.
Glass and mirrors confuse it.
Why robot makers choose it
Our readA humanoid needs to know what is around it in every direction. One Mid-360 does that for under a thousand dollars and about a quarter of a kilo, which is why it has become a common choice on research humanoids and robot dogs.
This is our reasoning from the public facts. No maker has confirmed it.
Robots using it
This list covers only the robots researched so far. A robot missing here may still use this part.
